Interpreter Ethics: Who Needs Them? Sept. 11 Columbus, OH The Interpreter Services Program of the Supreme Court of Ohio will host this workshop: Interpreter Ethics will provide an in-depth analysis of court interpreter ethics with special focus on the latest version of the proposed Ohio Code of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters and Translators. Participants will study canons and apply standards to common ethical dilemmas encountered by court interpreters. The presentations will be fast-paced, highly interactive and language-neutral. Language Mediation in the 21st Century: Communities in Collaboration Sept. 25 Kent, OH Kent State University will be hosting. Presenters and interpreters from Gallaudet and Ohio will come together for this one day event: Language is a vehicle which transmits ideas from one person to another through a visual or auditory medium. When circumstances dictate the need to switch between two languages and modalities, cognitive challenges are evident. An international team of scientists funded by a National Science Foundation grant are exploring how the brain mediates language visually. This presentation will cover research in the study of visual languages and how they are processed.

Topics will be covered such as rhythm, expressions, and interpreting common phrases found in songs and choruses.
